The Sultana theatre, Batu Pahat, Johor
Visit date : 2011
Year of build : 1920's
Current status : Demolished in 2014

Sultana theatre had been a ruin in the heart of Batu Pahat town for years. It became a true landmark in the area with its golden Shaw Brothers shield still proudly fixed in place above the main entrance.

Two off-kilter concrete ticket booths still remained in the little foyer, but the original theatre’s main hall was long gone and only an empty fenced off lot remained.

Back in 2008, the wooden 1st floor still somehow clung in place, as did most of the decayed remains of the neighbouring vacant shophouse lots on either side of the theatre. Then slowly over the next few years everything was cleared out, probably due to health and safety concerns. For a time the Sultana sat as a folly and became somewhat of an unofficial tourist attraction.

In 2014 the Sultana was finally demolished, I would have loved to have know what happened to that Shaw Brothers shield and
fluorescent sign.
